In this programme, Kirill Petrenko presents dance music from the 20th century: with sharp, expressionistic sounds, Béla Bartók describes in his ballet The Miraculous Mandarin the mercilessness of modern city life, in which there is no longer any place for humanity. The unhappy love story of a doll that comes to life, set against the colourful hustle and bustle of a Russian fair, is told by Igor Stravinsky in his bittersweet ballet Petrushka – energetic, folkloric and touching. Finally, Leoš Janáček celebrates the melancholic yet vital folk music of his Czech homeland in his Lašské tance (Lachische Tänze).
