Johannes Brahms set new standards with his First Symphony: its dramatic and darkly coloured tonal language made it the epitome of the late Romantic symphony, while its innovative thematic structure ensured that it continued to influence music well into the modern era.

Kirill Petrenko and the Berliner Philharmoniker combine Brahms' work with the expressive and brilliant oboe concerto by Bernd Alois Zimmermann, with solo oboist Albrecht Mayer playing the solo part.

Another discovery is the powerful Exeo for orchestra by Pascal Dusapin, a student of Olivier Messiaen and Iannis Xenakis.
