International Short Film Festival Berlin: SPECIALS

The Black Gaze reclaims narrative power and places Black identities perceived as female centre-stage – from the intimacy of Senegalese bedrooms to Haitian biologists in the forests of Cuba, all the way to cosmic worlds steeped in Afro-futurism. Sisters, scientists and ancestors navigate their way through memory, tradition, joy and self-determination.

The program renders the depth, diversity and resilience of Black existence visible, beyond clichés – in a mixture of documentary film, animation, archival work, live action and experimental formats. Remembrance, pleasure, empowerment and rebellion are given a voice, generating a cumulative narrative force: chaotic, intimate and uncompromisingly alive.
