With Gilda Sahebi, Johanna Bröse, and Morten Paul, moderated by Sara Morais dos Santos Bruss (Conversation)

In light of the growing strength of authoritarian regimes and right-wing populist movements worldwide, the question of solidarity and resistance is becoming central to reflections on everyday practices.

It seems that it is precisely here, in the seemingly apolitical spaces of formerly private life, that right-wing mobilizations are most successful. In particular, everyday experiences related to identity, language, and the environment are being fascized, especially in Germany. In other words, these areas are the basis for everyday society to adopt the political normativity of a fascist party without the need for one.

  • What do practices of solidarity and resistance mean in this new situation?
  • How can historically evolved understandings of fascism and mechanisms of resistance be updated to reflect contemporary conditions?

This panel is dedicated to the historical and current fault lines of fascism—the places and possibilities of countering it, both in Germany and in the global context. The focus will be on forms of political solidarity in times of increasing repression, the role of anti-fascist remembrance culture, and the significance of empathy and emotions as a practice of resistance.

The discussants will explore how collective remembrance of past struggles against fascism provides guidance for current strategies and the challenges associated with acting in solidarity in authoritarian societies. They will also address the question of how international movements can learn from each other and what strategies and horizons of understanding are needed today to think of the local and the global together. The goal is to open spaces for exchange and networking in which resistance is not only possible but also understood in its urgency.
