Worsening working and living conditions

How did the forced laborers in the German Reich experience the final months of the war before their liberation by the Allies?

In the final phase of the Second World War, the living and working conditions of the millions of forced laborers in the German Reich worsened. Air raids and the collapse of supplies hit them particularly hard.

At the same time, the forced laborers were increasingly exposed to persecution by the police, SS, and Wehrmacht. Many NSDAP members and other Nazi supporters also participated in acts of violence against foreigners.
