After the museum’s closure and the period of construction noise, life moves into the museum’s new rooms with fresh vigour and new energy. Together with neighbours, artists and young voices from the neighbourhood, they are creating a special day full of creativity and exchange.
Let’s celebrate together – the summer, Käthe Kollwitz’s birthday and the reopening of the museum with fresh impulses and a varied programme for everyone who wants to experience and help shape art.
The programme on 6 July

12 am - 3 pm Printing workshop - etching with Tetrapack
Drop-in offer in the education room / ground floor left
Intaglio printing: etching with Tetrapack
Käthe Kollwitz not only drew pictures, she also printed them. In the printing workshop, visitors can discover the differences between relief, planographic and intaglio printing processes, supplemented by examples of Kollwitz’ pictures in the exhibition, which illustrate the expressive power of these visual languages. Afterwards, you will design and print your own motif.
On the first Sunday of every month, all generations are invited to try out the monthly changing printing techniques.
Leader: Diogo deCalle
Participation is possible if there are still places available.
1 p.m. ‘To Paris with Mrs Kollwitz’ Concert by the Kita Acapella choir
In front of the museum
Thirteen pre-school children from the Kita am Schlosspark travel to Paris with Mrs Kollwitz and the steam locomotive on 6 July. Singing is fun – especially when travelling and on the train. However, this musical journey only takes about 25 minutes, so please arrive on time for departure. Mrs Kollwitz was on the road for much longer.
The backdrop for the journey is a walk-in, self-designed leporello in the form of a steam locomotive – created as part of the joint cooperation project in spring.
1.30 - 3.30 pm ‘Knete Kollwitz’ Modelling on the Kollwitz sculpture
At the Kollwitz sculpture
As part of a project entitled “Do you know Käthe Kollwitz?”, children from the primary school on Kollwitzplatz have recreated the seated figure from modelling clay at the Kollwitz monument – opposite the artist’s former home in Prenzlauer Berg. The head of the course, Katharina Grantner, is now taking this exercise to the second cast of the same Kollwitz sculpture by Gustav Seitz in Charlottenburg. An open drop-in programme – not just for children.
4 pm Artist talk and presentation of the animation ‘Käthe Kollwitz Reanimated’
In the cabinet room
This afternoon, another artist will be available for discussion in the same room and will provide insights into the creation of her art – animation.
With her project “Käthe Kollwitz Reanimated”, Vanessa Cardui brings the famous artist’s prints back to life with handmade stop-motion animations. In her associative moving images, she lends Kollwitz’ intense visual language an audiovisual dimension and brings its central motifs into dialogue.
The video can be seen from 11 am.
Participation in the programmes is included in the admission price.
