Berlin is an excellent example of the complexity of urban development. The unification of two cities overnight and the influx of more than 400,000 people since 1989 have had a major impact on the city. This change includes changes in traffic volumes, the conversion of old industrial sites (especially in the east) and the emergence of new business districts, which are often in the immediate vicinity of former problem areas.
As part of these urban development excursions, Berlin on Bike offers tours on the topics of sustainable mobility, the concept of the 15-minute city, inclusivity and the adaptation of cities to climate change. The tours are aimed at both public and private organizations/companies, as well as interested private individuals. On the one hand, you can benefit from the experiences of other cities, and on the other hand, an exchange about urban transformation can take place.
Apart from the interactive bike tour, where exciting projects are visited, the whole thing can be framed by a seminar before and after the tour. In the seminar, basic knowledge is imparted before the tour and findings are summarized and discussed/reflected after the tour.
The following four tour topics offer exciting insights into the transformation of the capital:
Sustainable mobility
- The development of public transport
- The car-friendly city of the 1950s: functional separation
- Mobility-as-a-service and the change to sustainable mobility?
15-minute city
- Tenement blocks and narrow backyards
- Special features of the polycentric city
- Innovative concepts: neighborhood blocks and multifunctional densification.
- Gentrification vs. alternative housing models
- Urban spaces that promote diversity and preserve creativity
- Gender and accessibility.
Climate resilience
- Climate protection and adaptation in the city
- Political measures and civic engagement
- Urban green spaces vs. living space
