The exhibition Earth's Shadow, Moon's Crust is dedicated to humanity's enduring fascination with the moon. Since time immemorial, Earth's satellite has served not only as a source of scientific exploration, but also as a mirror of human ideas, emotions, and desires. The exhibition conceives of Earth as the starting point of this lunar imagination—a place from which we observe and interpret the unknown.

The artists Alice Dittmar and Stella Geppert develop spatially and site-specific works that make the connection between Earth and Moon tangible in a poetic, sensual, and conceptual way. Their installations, drawings, and performative elements utilize natural materials such as water, stone, and light, as well as reflections, movement structures, and expansive constructions. The architecture of the Kunstbrücke am Wildenbruch is actively incorporated into the exhibition concept: The play with perspectives, reflections, and transitions between inside and outside is a central design element.

The exhibition explores how humans perceive the lunar surface and its composition through their earthly perception—and how strongly this perception is shaped by the environment, the body, and cultural influences.

The works on display invite visitors to sharpen their gaze: on what surrounds people and on what they only know from afar.

Particular attention is paid to the interaction between scientific research and artistic practice. Among other things, the works address new findings about water deposits in the permanently shaded craters of the lunar poles—and link them with artistic reflections on water as a medium of memory, reflection, and transformation.

An interdisciplinary supporting program accompanies the exhibition. In resonance with the lunar phases, performances and a scientific contribution will be offered, exploring the relationship between Earth and the Moon from different perspectives—between sound, movement, materiality, and cognition.
