Special presentation of the children's dress of Prince Ludwig Karl Wilhelm of Prussia

A red silk dress for a little boy? This was common practice in the 18th century. A portrait in Königs Wusterhausen Castle shows Frederick the Great's brother, Prince Ludwig Karl Wilhelm of Prussia (1717-1719), who died early, as a one- to two-year-old boy wearing a red child's dress with silver braids, trimmings and buttons.

At first glance, the prince's dress with its laced corsage and long flared skirt looks like a reduced size women's dress. Until the late 18th century, fashion for adults was the model for children's wardrobes in terms of cut and features. Not only girls, but also boys wore dresses until they were five years old.

The prince's silk dress has been well preserved to this day and will be on display for a short time in Königs Wusterhausen Palace. There you can find out more about the production method and the fashionable features of this princely dress.
