Discussion and workshop with Joseph De Veaugh-Geiss

The most sustainable device is the one you already own! On October 14, 2025, Microsoft will end support for Windows 10, forcing many users to replace their devices.

This will be costly for people – and the environment – as millions of functional devices will end up in the electronic waste. That's why the "End of 10" campaign supports upgrading old devices with open source software so they can continue to be used.

Learn in a free workshop with Joseph De Veaugh-Geiss (KDE) how you can use free, open source software to breathe new life into your old laptop (PC or Mac!), save money, and reduce toxic electronic waste.

Bring your curiosity and your questions – or even a laptop you'd like to upcycle with GNU/Linux. The workshop is expressly designed for beginners; no technical knowledge is required!

We'll begin with a meet & greet and a panel discussion to explore how free software can support literary institutions and the free literature scene, how everyone can work together to promote digital empowerment and help the environment.

Then we'll move on to the practical part:

Older Macs or PCs that are no longer supported by their manufacturers can be upgraded with the Linux operating system so they'll continue to function for many years to come. You're welcome to simply watch or get started right away with guidance. Don't worry – you don't have to completely switch everything over right away; you can, for example, use a "dual boot" to temporarily use both operating systems.

IMPORTANT: Back up any data on the device you want to upcycle to an external storage device or in the cloud before the event!

If you'd like to participate in the practical workshop, it's helpful to register in advance by email to magda.birkmann [at] lettretage.de to clarify some technical questions. Walk-ins are also welcome!
