Zafraan Ensemble

To mark the 100th birthday of Luciano Berio (1925–2003), the Zafraan Ensemble will present an exciting dialogue program in the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonie on November 4, 2025.

Together with Latvian soprano Katrīna Paula Felsberga, Berio's famous Folk Songs (1971) will be performed alongside eleven premieres of the Cabinet of Folksongs project.

While Berio reworked eleven folk and art songs from various countries for soprano and ensemble in his cycle, the commissioned works by eleven contemporary composers draw on the Latvian "dainas" – centuries-old, pre-Christian songs, poems, and sayings collected by the folklorist Krišjānis Barons (1835–1923) and now comprising almost one million entries.

Featuring new works by Lisa Streich, François Sarhan, Oscar Bianchi, Maija Hynninen, Zeynep Gedizlioğlu, Yoav Pasovsky, Samir Odeh-Tamimi, Claire-Mélanie Sinnhuber, Ian Anderson, Ádám Bajnok, and Manuela Guerra.
