On Monday, 22 September 2025, International Car-Free Day, the Bündnisgrüne Fraktion Treptow-Köpenick (Treptow-Köpenick Green Party) invites you to its annual bicycle demonstration. This time, the demonstration will start at 4 p.m. at Treptow Town Hall.

The route will pass through the neighbourhoods of Baumschulenweg, Schöneweide, Johannisthal and Alt-Treptow – all places where cyclists face poor infrastructure and unsafe roads on a daily basis.

With this demonstration, we are sending a clear signal for a fair, safe and sustainable transport policy. Despite increasing bicycle use, the CDU-led Senate Department for Mobility has decided on massive cuts in the area of bicycle traffic in recent months. Necessary funds have been cut, and projects that were already planned have been slowed down or stopped altogether. This includes key measures in Treptow-Köpenick – a devastating signal for the transport transition in our district.

Andreas Paul from ADFC Treptow-Köpenick comments:
"Children need self-determined mobility – and we must create the conditions for this. This includes school routes without the dangers posed by parent taxis – for example, the Bicibus initiative in Bohnsdorf. It also includes an understanding of the diversity of all forms of mobility – for example, the city rally at FEZ Berlin. And, of course, it includes high-quality cycling infrastructure – as an alternative to a car-friendly city.‘

District Councillor Dr Claudia Leistner explains:
’The change in policy at state level, which is slowing down cycling and traffic-calming measures and putting the focus back on car traffic, is a step backwards and contradicts Berlin's Mobility Act. In my role as district councillor, I remain committed to a sustainable and social transport transition – for greater road safety, accessibility in public spaces, vibrant neighbourhoods and a mobility policy that pays particular attention to vulnerable road users.

Despite reduced state funding, we in the district office are actively pushing ahead with plans for the neighbourhood block in the Kungerkiez in Alt-Treptow. The implementation planning for the Bouchéstraße cycle lane has already begun. We are also delighted that InfraVelo will be installing around 800 new bicycle parking facilities at railway stations over the next two years – in addition, a bicycle parking garage and another parking facility with a total of over 1,100 spaces will be built at the Schöneweide S-Bahn station. Beyond that, we are also continuing to press ahead with the expansion of cycling and pedestrian infrastructure in the district – for safe routes in everyday life and on the way to school. But one thing is clear: if Berlin is serious about the mobility transition, the black-red Senate must actively support it – and stop blocking it."

Christian Huber, transport policy spokesperson for the parliamentary group, adds:
"The bike demo is more relevant than ever. The Senate administration's obstructionist attitude risks derailing urgently needed projects in the district. At the same time, new danger spots are constantly emerging due to dilapidated cycle paths and double parking. Instead of paving the way for climate-friendly, safe and balanced mobility for all, the dominance of cars in traffic is being further cemented financially and politically. We say: No! We are fighting for safe cycle paths, especially in the suburbs!"

Spread the word, come along and bring your bikes!

Whether you have a racing bike, cargo bike or child trailer, all non-motorised two-wheelers are welcome. Together we will show that we will not let cycling be ruined by austerity measures!
