House of Saint Laurent

“Beyond Ballroom” provides insights into the culture and social significance of the ballroom scene – a movement that originated in New York's Black and Latin American queer community. Originating in the 1960s as a reaction to racist exclusions at white drag balls, Ballroom – led by pioneers such as Crystal LaBeija – became a space of collective self-empowerment, care and visibility.

Ballroom has long since arrived in pop culture: Its language, aesthetics and forms of expression shape music, dance, fashion and film. But beyond the glamour, Ballroom remains a political place – especially for BIPoC LGBTQ communities.

The second evening, entitled “Excellence and Impact Beyond the Floor”, recognises the central role of the trans community in the ballroom scene. Guests from the USA and Europe will discuss resilience, leadership and creativity – as well as existing barriers. The focus is on concrete strategies for strengthening trans people in leadership roles and shaping structural changes in the long term.

Beyond Ballroom” will be moderated by Tabytha Maison Margiela, a renowned activist and human rights expert specialising in the fight for the rights of BIPoC transgender and queer communities. She is known for her work on the documentary film “The Stroll” and as co-host of the podcast “FQ Crazy Sexy Cool”.The format is aimed equally at the ballroom community and a broad, interested audience.
