The music of Akinetón Retard provokes a sort of tagging fever. Critics flip, although they do not openly accept it, producing definitions at random. The most virtuous of them achieve a mix of four different styles in only one word, going like this: “Electroacoustic Avant-Free Rock Fascist-Comunist Spontaneous Clowny Ensemble”.
Biography:
“When the electric guitars and hysterical saxophones of the rock project reached its first ten years of life, Akinetón Retard was much more than the name of a medicine against Parkinson. It wasn’t only the name given to a band born from the Arts School’s undergrounds of Universidad de Chile, Akinetón Retard was a concept by itself: the most intense and effective project of a community of experimental musicians who opened their creative minds in an age post to “Agrupación Ciudadanos”. Their work has demonstrated a continued exploration during two decades including tours to Europe, Japan and China.
It was in 2004 when Akinetón Retard reached the rank of “avant-garde rock superstars”. A tour through Europe during five months, beginning on May, with 20,000 km on the road and forty six concerts in twenty four cities placed the band in a high stand being qualified as “latino jazz underground”, “orchestraler jazz”, “urban strong jazz” or “Frank Zappa versus Godzilla styles, but more jazzy and cool”.
Their following jump abroad was a faraway tour to China and Japan in 2007, to play concerts in places such as The Contemporary Music Conservatory in Beijing and theatres in Osaka and Tokyo. The EFE Agency correspondent described his experience in Beijing as “music loaded with optimistic anguish”.” David Ponce
