based on the novel by Irmgard Keun with Johanna Marie Bourgeois

In 1933, 19-year-old Susanne Moder leaves her parents' home and comes to Cologne to live with her aunt Adelheid, who is disappointed with life but enthusiastic about Hitler. Two years later, her aunt denounces the unwelcome niece, who has since become engaged to her son Franz, to the Gestapo.

After a mild interrogation, Susanne is released and moves to Frankfurt to live with her stepbrother Algin and his wife. Franz, meanwhile, tries to set up a small cigarette business - but is denounced by a competitor, an avowed Nazi, and ends up in prison.

After his release, Franz takes bitter revenge on the traitor and is able to escape to Frankfurt undetected. Sanna decides to accompany Franz on his escape, taking the train to Rotterdam - a departure into a completely uncertain future.
