Where does the anger come from, citizen? Where does the violence come from? Why so loud now? With a text by Elias Kosanke and in the discussion of interviews with contemporary witnesses as well as texts by Steffen Mau, Manja Präkels, Hendrik Bolz, Grit Lemke, Christian Bangel and Olivia Wenzel, among others, "ABBAU OST" questions entrenched images of the unification of the two German states as a story of success or victimhood.
Nine post-reunification children ask themselves what happened in the families that no longer talk about politics, only argue and no longer understand each other. How could such conditions even arise? How does the aunt come to spread anti-Semitic conspiracy theories now? What cross-generational views and traumatic experiences are being skilfully brought to the surface by right-wing populists in order to harness overwhelmed, dismantled, transformation-weary GDR children and grandchildren to their inhumane cart? And why do people look to the East so much more often when right-wing violence is discussed?
Equipped with a camera, the players examine the upbringing of a generation and look for the bridges and gaps to previous generations. In self-reflection, they may notice that discourses in their bubble are not always conducted for the sake of knowledge, but at least for mutual self-assurance.
