Symbol of life in the former border strip
A blooming rye field in the former death strip - a symbol of the cycle of life, of peace, hope and the power of nature. This is where the Berlin Wall separated families and friendships, a city and a country, for over 28 years. This is where the Church of Reconciliation was first walled in and then blown up by the GDR border regime in 1985. Today, new life is being created here.
The art project, initiated by Michael Spengler/Atelier denkwerk and the Evangelische Versöhnungsgemeinde, on the grounds of the Berlin Wall Memorial, has become a living part of the memorial landscape on the former GDR border strip as a biotope in its own right. The field is cultivated, the rye is sown, it grows and is harvested again.
Because various actors and institutions have continued to get involved over the years, the art project has grown into a multi-layered social community. To mark the 20th anniversary of the Roggenfeld, this exhibition pays tribute to the commitment of many. They are all united by the joy of working at the intersection of art, ecology, history, spirituality and politics in the heart of the capital.
