Natalie Garcia

In her documentary photography project, German-Mexican artist Natalie Garcia examines how gender-specific insecurities affect women's choices of route in public spaces in Mexico City.

Combining photography and interviews, she illuminates the thoughts, memories and decisions of Diana, who is pregnant, as she walks through her neighbourhood with her daughter Sofía.

The work, which was awarded the Gender Prize by the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, thus visualises the interplay of space and gender, in which insecurities, social structures, human experience and movement are mutually dependent.
