Two twins. Both of whom are black. One of whom is white passing. A media frenzy erupts when one twin kills the other. Seeing the story as an allegory for structural violence, a screenwriter starts writing a film about the twins. However, the more she delves into the case, the more she becomes entangled in her desire to turn the events into a story and reveal »the big picture«.

Lamin Leroy Gibba’s Die Zwillinge (The Twins) unfolds like a panopticon: a matryoshka doll of voices; a merry-go-round that never stops. This is her first time directing at Studio Я, with author Lamin projection, and between interpretive authority and loss of control. Entangled between truth and fiction, the characters navigate their way forward under observation, searching for a self-image that constantly eludes them.

Having worked on 1000 Serpentinen Angst, Joana Tischkaunow returns to the Maxim Gorki Theatre to make her directing debut at Studio Я alongside the author.
