A puppet theatre spectacular for everyone aged four and up
From January 17 to February 3, 2026, children will take over the stage of the former Stasi headquarters. Campus for Democracy at this historic site.
As part of the first children's puppet theater festival on this site, the Fingerleicht Puppet Theater presents five exciting plays that creatively explore the theme of secrets. The festival is an adventure for everyone aged 4 and up, inviting them to discover, keep, or question secrets.
Red Suitcase, Secret Thief – A Play about Secrets and Betrayal
The highlight of the festival is the play "Red Suitcase, Secret Thief," which deals with one of the most intriguing secrets in GDR history: Erich Mielke's secret suitcase, which contained incriminating documents about Erich Honecker. In this play, the suitcase itself becomes a character, raising questions about the meaning of secrets, their power, and the consequences of betrayal. What happens when a secret is revealed? What role does secrecy play? With plenty of imagination and humor, the themes of friendship and betrayal come alive for children.
Historical Background
The red suitcase was a symbol of the secret power structures within the Ministry for State Security (Stasi) of the GDR. Erich Mielke, the Minister for State Security, kept it in his office while collecting compromising documents about the head of state, Erich Honecker, in the 1980s. This puppet show takes this historical secret and transforms it into an imaginative and educational adventure for children.
