In eleven chapters, Erpenbeck recounts, in a documentary style, the time and history of three generations that befall this patch of earth, from an architect successful during the Nazi era who builds a house according to his wife's wishes, to a Jewish cloth manufacturer who sells the property below value and is deported and murdered with his family.
