Guided tour of the Stasi Records Archive at its historical location
For 40 years, the Stasi secured the rule of the ruling Socialist Unity Party (SED). In its "fight against the enemy," the Ministry for State Security (Stasi) expanded ever further, both in Lichtenberg and throughout East Germany. In 1990, courageous citizens not only saved the secret police's files from destruction, but also reclaimed Mielke's headquarters as a public space.
Today, the Stasi Records Archive, part of the Federal Archives, is located here and sheds light on the activities of the Stasi and its archives.
"A Monument to Surveillance"
The Stasi Records Archive contains 111 kilometers of files, many of which hold personal data about individuals—collected by the State Security Service. The exhibition "A Glimpse into the Secret" makes the significance of this archive tangible.
After the guided tour, you will have the opportunity to visit the sample file collection. It consists of reproductions of original Stasi documents. In addition to files and personnel records of Stasi officers, the archive also contains files of those affected. These individuals have consented to the publication of their documents, making a "glimpse into the secret" possible.
Registration is possible via einblick-ins-geheime@bundesarchiv.de or by phone at +49 30 18 665-6699.
