AN IMMERSIVE JOURNEY TO THE ARCTIC AND ANTARCTIC
ClimateXtremes – Polar Experience is an interactive multimedia exhibition that takes visitors on an immersive journey to the coldest places on our planet. The science-based exhibition will celebrate its world premiere in Berlin on 5 December 2025.
Experience an expedition into the eternal ice
Thanks to state-of-the-art technology and spectacular staging, visitors can experience the mysterious polar regions, their majestic ice landscapes and their unique wildlife up close.
The Arctic and Antarctic come to life. Virtual experiences, immersive imagery and impressive soundscapes catapult visitors to the North Pole, into the heart of the expedition of the research vessel ‘Polarstern’, and to the Neumayer research station at the South Pole.
In the footsteps of science: travelling to the coldest places on Earth
This immersive journey to the most extreme climate zones on Earth reveals the findings of the research expeditions conducted by the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), the internationally recognised centre of excellence for polar and marine research, led by polar researcher and expedition leader Prof. Markus Rex.
In close cooperation with the AWI and other scientific partners, these findings are now being made available to a wide audience for the first time.
Science meets experience
The ‘ClimateXtremes – Polar Experience’ begins with virtual boarding on the research vessel ‘Polarstern’. Here, expedition participants are prepared for their adventure in the eternal ice by Prof. Markus Rex, polar researcher and expedition leader.
From there, the journey continues through the ‘Fascination of Ice’ to the largest experience room, a 360° spatial experience with an interactive projection that illuminates the Arctic and Antarctic, the beauty of nature and the world of the animals that live there, creating an impressive emotional experience.
Visitors then enter two further rooms dedicated to the habitats of the animals and people of the polar regions. The focus here is on the polar bear, the seal, the sea eagle and the penguin as the best-known animals at the North and South Poles. Representative of the people of the Arctic is the documentary about the Yupik, which addresses impressive messages to the rest of the world.
The tour of ‘ClimateXtremes – Polar Experience’ culminates in the ‘Act Now’ room, a festival-like interactive experience that highlights ways to get involved in climate and environmental protection.
Numerous companies, start-ups and NGOs that are already setting an example in climate and environmental protection are presented here.
Visitors are encouraged to get involved and take action in a playful way. From small measures to large-scale campaigns, ‘Act Now’ offers something for everyone and provides food for thought and action, while also showing that climate and environmental protection can be fun.
An exhibition for all generations
All offerings are designed for an audience aged 5 to 95, are easy to implement and, at the same time, highly relevant to our planet. The starting and ending point of the immersive journey is the welcome area with ticketing, service counters and carefully curated products.
A declaration of love for our Earth
The exhibition is a declaration of love for our Earth. It invites visitors to experience first-hand how international teams of researchers mastered the greatest polar expeditions in history to unravel the secrets of the Arctic and Antarctic.
State-of-the-art technology, immersive images and soundscapes, and interactive exhibits bring the magical ice landscapes and their unique wildlife to life. Entertainment meets science: Young explorers are guided playfully through the expedition by Cosmo, known from Galileo Kids, while experienced research fans can delve deep into scientific contexts.
The content from Galileo flows organically into the overall concept, and Cosmo, the mascot of Galileo Kids, accompanies children on their journey through the exhibition.
The Polar Experience is designed as a hands-on exhibition.
Numerous hands-on stations invite visitors to get involved and develop ideas for a shared, sustainable future.
