Rediscover what it was like to be a student – the cafeteria of the Technical University is open to all visitors. At lunchtime, there’s a steady stream of students, but otherwise it’s a well-kept secret. From outside, you wouldn’t know it’s there, and other than students, hardly anyone knows about its catering and the view.
The view from the TU cafeteria
The main reason to visit the Skyline student cafeteria is the fantastic view. From the 20th floor of the Telefunkenhochhaus at Ernst-Reuter-Platz you can, as the name suggests, enjoy the skyline of Berlin. The Telefunkenhochhaus is a listed building in the centre of West Berlin, and at 80 metres, it was the tallest building in the city until the mid-1960s. It has 22 storeys which are now used as offices, as well as by the Technical University of Berlin.
The food – not just cheap and cheerful
But the free panoramic view over the city is not the only reason to pay a visit. The Cafeteria TU Skyline, which opened in 2007, offers food and drink at attractive prices. Even before the lectures begin, from 7.30 a.m. the cafeteria serves coffee, doughnuts and muffins. An hour later, breakfast is ready with rolls, salads and cakes. From 11.30 there is soup and two choices of lunch, which change every day. Main dishes rarely cost more than 6 euros. A vegetarian or vegan dish is always on the menu.
The ideal time to visit
At peak times – around 12 o’clock – more than 250 guests come to the public cafeteria, although there is plenty of room, with space for 820 people. Students do their assignments on their laptops, drink a coffee to shake off a late night and discuss the seminars they have just been to. For a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere, it's best to come up after 2 p.m. when the rush is over and most of the students are back at their lectures.
