With MEITZ/MÜLLER/HERTENSTEN, the Berlin improvisation scene comes together in a top-notch lineup. Volker Meitz has been a defining figure in free music for decades – known, among other things, as the founder of the legendary solo improv series, which has taken place annually at the Ackerstadt Palast since 2018 and is one of the most important platforms for solo improvisation in Berlin.
Together with Matthias Müller (trombone) and Joe Hertenstein (drums), Meitz moves within the realm of electronic music, jazz, and popular genres, with a clear focus on avant-garde and free improvisation. The music is open, energetic, and daring, characterized by intensification and collective creation in the moment.
Meitz's sonic palette ranges from acoustic piano to effect-laden synthesizers and live electronics. His musical biography blends the improv scene with club culture and experimental pop aesthetics: In the 1990s, he played in one of the first live drum 'n' bass acts (Analogue Freestyle), and later worked as a producer and remixer for artists including Jazzanova, Dixon, Popol Vuh, and Femi Kuti. He has released approximately 80 recordings.
