Roelant Savery painted paradise as a European landscape teeming with animals from distant continents. At its center sits Orpheus, the first musician of Greek mythology. He plays not a lyre, however, but a cello – very much in keeping with the style of his time.

Roelant Savery belonged to a circle of artists around Jan Brueghel the Younger, who specialized in paradisiacal landscapes. These paintings combine a fascination with the exotic with the ancient notion that music expresses celestial harmony. This captivating connection between religious music and secular painting will be explored through music and spoken word by musician Gaby Bultmann and art historian Lutz Stöppler.
