In this creative workshop for Black History Month, participants can design their own personal flag.
What does freedom mean? What colors and shapes represent it? This Sunday in the Nikolaiviertel, participants will create individual flags of freedom from fabric, colored paper, and textile paints in celebration of Black History Month.
The workshop is inspired by the story of Harriet Tubman (1822–1913), a heroine of the African American community in the USA. During the American Civil War (1861–1865), she helped numerous enslaved people escape from the Southern states to the Northern states so they could live in freedom. For secret communication during their escape, her helpers are said to have made blankets whose patterns and colors conveyed vital information that only enslaved people could decipher.
The project is inspired by the story of Harriet Tubman (1822–1913), a heroine of the African American community in the USA.
