Lecture by Christoph Wowarra
The lecture sheds light on Wilhelm Wagenfeld's (1900-1990) career as a designer for the porcelain and glass industry during the National Socialist era.
It will be shown that Wagenfeld had already laid the foundations for his professional success during the Weimar Republic (Staatliches Bauhaus and Staatliche Bauhochschule Weimar, later self-employment) and that it is only by looking at his activities before 1933 that it is possible to localize his actions during National Socialism.
In addition to his classic design work, the articulation of his design principles was an important element of his work. Wagenfeld expressed his views on questions of design in the form of publications and lectures or actively contributed his positions to associations such as the Deutscher Werkbund and other networks.
But how did Wagenfeld - as a designer shaped by the principles of modernism - position himself and his work within the totalitarian Nazi regime?
Christoph Wowarra's lecture will take place as part of the opening of the archive presentation "Repressed Chapter - the Werkbund in the Context of National Socialism" on November 27.
