On the 75th birthday of Jürgen Fuchs

"To say what is." – That’s what the writer Jürgen Fuchs always did. He captured reality with sparse precision and held up a mirror to the Second German Dictatorship like few others.

Leftist criticism was a thorn in the side of the SED cadres. They responded with full severity, aiming to silence the unwelcome voice. Thus, the Stasi imprisoned him – someone who observed closely, walked upright, and stood in solidarity with his friend Wolf Biermann – and expelled him from the GDR. But his voice did not fall silent.

Jürgen Fuchs, who once studied social psychology in Jena, embodied the entire GDR opposition and, through his example, gave it support and direction. He died far too young at the age of 48 in Berlin. On December 19, 2025, he would have turned 75.
