The world is on the brink of collapse: class struggle, violence, and upheaval characterize the era leading up to the French Revolution. Even in the house of Count von Moor, order is crumbling.
Franz, the estranged son, weaves a plot against his brother Karl out of envy and revenge, leading to Karl's disownment. Karl joins a band of robbers to fight against the injustices of the world—while Franz unleashes the dark side of the lust for power.
