Musical settings of the Japanese Pillow Book

This year's Frohnau Chamber Concert will be dedicated to Far Eastern literature and its rich interpretation. The program will focus on musical explorations of the famous Japanese "Pillow Book"—a unique testament to women's lives at the imperial court some thousand years ago.

The work originated when a young lady-in-waiting received blank parchment pages from her mistress. She filled them with subtle observations of her daily life, descriptions of courtly customs, and intimate thoughts on love, transience, and beauty. The collection, which she hid under her pillow, is now considered a literary gem. In Japan, it is part of the canon of knowledge, while in Germany it has been published in a wide variety of editions—including bibliophile collector's editions.

This special concert will feature two compositions based on excerpts from the Pillow Book:

  • Klaus Schöpp will set passages from the original Japanese text to music.

  • Bardo Henning sets to music a lyrical adaptation by Thomas Göller, who lived in Japan for several years, entitled "Ferne Nähe" (Distant Closeness).

Between these two works, a meditative composition for solo vibraphone by the internationally renowned Spanish composer Maria de Alvear creates a sonic haven of tranquility, opening a space for reflection and interlude.
