Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio is quite old – it was written in 1734! Nevertheless, it is still performed all over the world today, especially during the Christmas season.
The work tells the story of Jesus' birth – the story of Mary, Joseph, the angels, the shepherds, and the wise men from the East. Bach wrote music for it that sounds festive and joyful at times, and calm and contemplative at others.
To this day, the Christmas Oratorio is a simple part of Christmas for many people – like cookies, candles, and singing together.
