An event within the framework of Berlin Freedom Week 2025

Nilofar Ayoubi, a women's rights activist from Afghanistan, and Carine Kanimba, a political activist from Rwanda and Belgium, share their personal commitment to fighting oppression and violence – and what it means to maintain hope when freedom can no longer be taken for granted.

Their stories are testaments to courage and resilience – to escape, new beginnings, and the conviction that freedom, equality, and human dignity are universal rights. Together, we want to discuss how civil society, solidarity, and the international community can strengthen freedom movements worldwide – and what democracies must do to credibly protect these values.

In Germany, too, it is clear that freedom is not a state, but a task. Polarization, mistrust, dwindling cohesion, and political indifference are increasingly testing the foundations of our open society.

The discussion therefore focuses on key questions about the state and future of free societies:

  • How can individual civil liberties be secured? What prerequisites are needed for religious and cultural tolerance?
  • What responsibility do the state, society, and each and every individual bear when democratic principles begin to falter?
  • And how can social cohesion be fostered in the long term?

An event about courage, responsibility, and the power of freedom – here and everywhere.
