15. Ephraim Veitel Soirée. Continuation of the new series: "Jewish men and women shape Berlin - from the 18th to the 20th century".
The city of Berlin, once the cultural metropolis of the Weimar Republic, developed from 1933 onwards into an important location for cultural and literary activities by German Jews who were unable or initially unwilling to emigrate from Nazi Germany. Committed to very different political, religious and artistic-aesthetic views, they were confronted with the question of whether and how they could or should still speak in public.
The lecture examines how the experiences of failed emancipation and increasing threat became visible in the literature of this period. It also examines whether and how artistic and aesthetic concepts changed as a result. The political upheaval of 1933 is seen as the trigger for a deep crisis in which earlier traditions were critically questioned. This situation led to increased reflection on one's own role and self-image - and offered space for criticism and contradiction.
- Lecture: Prof. Dr. Kerstin Schoor (Viadrina, Frankfurt/Oder)
