10 years of Muslim burials at the New Twelve Apostles Cemetery

While the general trend in Germany is moving toward space-saving urn burials, Muslim traditions call for burial in a shroud. Only with the abolition of the coffin requirement as part of the Anti-Discrimination Act did coffinless burials become possible in Germany.

To this day, however, Berlin's Muslim communities do not have their own cemeteries. They are therefore dependent on other cemetery operators providing grave plots where burials can be carried out according to Muslim rites. However, this does not meet the current demand of approximately 2,000 graves per year – even though Berlin's cemeteries are even experiencing surplus space. This is a structural failure with regard to social participation and visibility.

How can this shortage be addressed? And how can interreligious coexistence be achieved?
