Every painting is an involuntary testimony to its time, but also to a specific space. Berlin artists have spent decades or their entire working lives incorporating Berlin as a space into their work.

Sometimes this documentation is entirely intentional – as in the case of Claire Krack, Evelyn Kuwertz, Michael Schnittmann, Rudolf Stüssi and Sigurd Wendland.

In other pictures we show, the city is more of a backdrop for the city dwellers in the artistic focus, as in the case of Karoline Koeppel. Others concentrate entirely on interiors – such as Pavel Feinstein or Christoph Wetzel – but are no less urbanites for that. In keeping with this, Berlin figures by Sorina von Keyserling and Ernst Leonhardt are also part of the exhibition.
