Get on the mat! is a dance performance for everyone aged 4 and up: five bodies, one oversized mat – and a world full of possibilities. At times it becomes a soft cloud, then a dangerous slope.
It transforms into a surfboard, a wall, a raft, a roof, a bridge, a playing field. The five performers climb, slide, build, hide, argue, support one another, lose their balance – and discover new paths.
What at first seems like joyful play reveals deeper layers on closer inspection: it is about struggle, boundaries, courage, and solidarity. Who is allowed on? Who has to stay out? Who holds on when everything tips over?
Current issues of this time are reflected here: refugee movements colliding with holiday paradises and luxury beaches; walls erected for border protection; a growing backward shift towards isolation and protectionism. All of this is not presented in a heavy-handed way, but rather approached with humor, physical strength, and a touch of parody.
With imagination, lightness, and irony, the performance explores how people deal with obstacles, how they negotiate spaces, and how they can dream of arrival together. A piece for children and adults alike - moving, playful, and thoughtful.
Get on the mat! was developed from an idea by LUNA PARK’s artistic director, Kosmas Kosmopoulos, in collaboration with the participating dancers and in close exchange with the pupils and their families at Gesundbrunnen Primary School.
LUNA PARK, founded in 2003 as an open collective of freelance artists from different disciplines and institutionally established in 2019 as a non-profit association at Gesundbrunnen Primary School, works in a socially highly challenged environment. LUNA PARK regularly realizes artistic productions in the field of contemporary dance as well as extracurricular arts education projects for children, young people, and young adults – in Berlin and in international exchange.
