New dimensions behind enemy lines
The military defense of Ukraine has brought entirely new dimensions of warfare to light over the past three years, while also vividly demonstrating the central importance of powerful intelligence services on the tactical, operational, and strategic levels.
One example is the vital role of satellite reconnaissance in the early detection and warning of ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as drones of all kinds. The Ukrainian military intelligence service, in turn, has achieved remarkable success in identifying and targeting Russian military assets.
Similar developments can be observed in the conflicts in the Middle East: for years, Israel’s intelligence services have been laying the groundwork for a massive military strike against Iran’s military and security infrastructure. This has enabled the targeted killing of numerous military, intelligence, and nuclear science leaders.
The importance of highly capable, modern intelligence services that are built up over the long term and strategically positioned for the security and defense capability of states has become more evident than ever. What can – and what must – we learn from this?
