Traditional Jewish music and contemporary sounds from the Middle East
Israeli mezzo-soprano and arranger Talya G. A. Solan founded the Yamma Ensemble in 2010. Inspired by the traditions of her Yemeni and Sephardic grandparents, she is dedicated to the many facets of Jewish music – from ancient melodies to contemporary sounds.
The repertoire includes songs from the diaspora on the Iberian Peninsula, the Balkans, the Babylonian exile, Yemen, as well as original compositions. The musical diversity is reflected in the arrangements and instruments from different cultural circles. The lyrics are in Ladino, Hebrew, and Arabic. The band's name also reflects multilingualism: in Hebrew, “Yamma” means “towards the sea,” in Arabic “mother,” and in Spanish “flame.”
For their debut at the Jewish Culture Days Berlin, the Yamma Teiman project will present songs from their current album Teiman, a tribute to Yemeni Jewish women whose songs tell of a longing for freedom and resilience in the face of centuries of oppression.
