An interdisciplinary concert in honor of the Black South

Musician and winner of the 2024 Listen To Berlin Award, Sorvina, presents ‘Mississippi’, an interdisciplinary concert and multimedia experience that will premiere on 4 December 2025 at the Kesselhaus in Berlin.

The production combines live music, film and ritual elements and focuses on Sorvina's personal and family roots in the US state of Mississippi and the cultural heritage of the Black South.

The show features singing, a choir, specially produced short films and a performance by the Berlin dance collective Movement Seven, known for its expressive movement language. Together, they form a narrative that links themes such as memory, migration and spirituality while also addressing central questions of survival.

Inspired by artists such as Noname, Tyler, The Creator and Little Simz, Sorvina's music is characterised by fearless authenticity and cross-genre
creativity. Musically, the spectrum ranges from hip-hop to gospel to soul.

With lyrics, images and musical elements from different genres, ‘Mississippi’ approaches the theme of Southern identity from a queer black perspective. The project sees itself as both a concert and a personal exploration of history and the present.
