What does it take for us to truly connect? For us to come together as a family? The “there” and the “here” have shaped us; in different ways. Words often fail. Where does the break with what has shaped us begin? When do we start moving away from what has shaped us? And where can we meet – honestly and authentically? A constant longing accompanies us. But whether we are brave enough to follow it remains uncertain.
In Your Baggage Unattended, a family, long divided, finds itself in the waiting area of an airport — the transit space between past and possibility, between estrangement and arrival, between homeland and home.
Here, where familiar structures begin to falter, each person encounters themselves: their own wounds, suppressed desires, and unspoken intergenerational expectations. Sisters and siblings, mother, daughter, father, son, first- and second-born circle around each other. The ties are complex and fractured. And so, the layover becomes a mirror, reflecting questions of responsibility and care.
Your Baggage Unattended is the outcome of a large-scale theatre workshop: Extended Cooperation. Around forty theatre-makers came together at Ballhaus Naunynstraße to learn from one another, receive input from contributors, and create theatre from the richness of these encounters.
Extended Cooperation was made possible through the prize money from the Federal Theatre Prize, awarded to Ballhaus Naunynstraße in 2023 as a unique framework for new practices of theatre-making. From it emerged two plays and two workshop productions.
Your Baggage Unattended is a debut in several respects: it is the first play by authors Elona Beqiraj and Jenaba Samura, the result of their first collaboration; and after several dramaturgical works at the venue, it marks the directorial debut of Thu Hoài Tran at Ballhaus Naunynstraße.
