A conversation about concepts, finances, spaces

The Central and Regional Library Berlin (ZLB) is the largest public library in Germany and one of the most frequently used cultural and educational institutions in the country.

Libraries have long been established as indispensable public spaces – places where diverse social groups come together every day. They are an essential part of our democratic society.

The ZLB is currently spread across two public locations and an external stack. This fragmentation poses a significant challenge, especially since both buildings are in urgent need of renovation. A viable solution has been sought for years – so far without success.

The situation is becoming increasingly critical: Due to the Berlin Senate's budget cuts, the ZLB is massively underfunded. As a result, the current offerings can no longer be maintained in their current form.

  • This raises the crucial question: What is the future of the ZLB?
