As part of the Berlin Freedom Week (8–15 November 2025), the DDR Museum invites you to a special evening with historian Dr. Ilko-Sascha Kowalczuk. He will read from his book Freiheitsschock and discuss East Germany’s past and future. Kowalczuk describes reunification as a profound “shock of freedom,” the effects of which are still felt today.

He highlights both the successes and the challenges of unity, criticizes victim mentalities as well as West German clichés – and calls for personal responsibility, historical awareness, and democracy. An evening for all interested in history and social dialogue.
