Lecture by Dr. Peter Bolz, ethnologist

Between 1849 and 1858, Balduin Möllhausen explored the still unexplored West of the USA on three trips, twice as a participant in official US government expeditions. He wrote extensive travelogues and over 40 novels about these journeys, which served Karl May as a model for his later Wild West fantasies.

The 49 watercolors that Möllhausen presented to Prussian King Frederick William IV as illustrations of his travels are now kept in the collection of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation in Potsdam.

The lecture sheds light not only on Möllhausen's adventurous travels, but also on his relationships with Alexander von Humboldt and the Prussian Prince Friedrich Karl.
