This extraordinary mass by the Italian-Argentine composer Daniel Pacitti combines liturgical elements with traditional Latin American rhythms.
Each movement is assigned to a musical genre, including:
– Baguala: a slow, meditative chant from northwestern Argentina, often accompanied only by drums.
– Copla: a simple, poetic song form with great expressiveness.
– Saya: a rhythmic, festive Afro-Bolivian dance with strong percussion.
– Bailecito: an elegant, dance-like rhythm from the Andean region.
– Malambo: a virtuoso, powerful dance with sonorous footbeats.
– Zamba Norteña: a solemn, soulful dance form from northern Argentina.
– Vidalita: a melancholic, lyrical chant, often with themes such as love or farewell.
– Rito Incaico: musical echoes of ceremonial practices of pre-Columbian Andean cultures.
The work unfolds a sonic journey through the myths, belief systems, and musical identities of South America, Africa, and Australia. At the same time, it invites reflection on the environment, climate change, and the future of our planet – under the symbolic light of the Southern Cross constellation, which we understand as a mirror of this time.
