The research and lecture series From the Margins: Rediscovered Lives from the Archives is dedicated to exploring the lives and work of remarkable individuals from the broad field of visual art who, for a variety of reasons, have been forgotten, marginalized, or pushed to the fringes of cultural memory.

The third lecture in the series is dedicated to Hanna Kiel (1894–1988) — an author, art historian, intellectual, and friend of the Mann siblings, the sculptor Renée Sintenis, and many others.

Georg Kolbe created a bust of Hanna Kiel. From 1939 onward, she lived in Italy. Her life and intellectual biography were shaped by multiple languages, cultures, and places. Archival materials and information about her are scattered and fragmented. Her vivid account of the final weeks of World War II, written in August 1944 in the hills of Fiesole, was only published in 2024 by Aviva Verlag (Berlin).

Eva-Maria Thüne is Professor of German Language, Linguistics, and Literature at the University of Bologna (Italy). In 2024, she published Hanna Kiel’s text "The Battle for the Hill: A Chronicle from Fiesole in August 1944".
