Mixed Media Performance Installation from The Incredible, Edible Akynos in the frame of Tanznacht Berlin 2025: Vocal Affairs
“I Didn’t Mean To Turn You On – IDMTYO” is a mixed-media performance installation by Akynos exploring the intersections of sex work and environmental justice through the lens of Black Sex Worker experience.
Sex work as Environmental Practice and Radical Inheritance
Challenging global disregard for sexual labour, the work proposes that Black sex workers hold crucial, overlooked solutions to the climate crisis.
Through storytelling, archival materials, imagery, and video, “IDMTYO” highlights how sex workers practice sustainability—from clothing swaps to care-based community infrastructure—while living and working in the fallout of extractive economies. The installation includes photographs, zines and magazines on sex work, and videos that blend Akynos’ sensual labour with themes from the Global South, including oil extraction, electricity shortages and water scarcity.
The experience culminates in a live performance, where the erotic becomes a site of power, memory, and resistance. “IDMTYO” reclaims sex work as environmental practice and radical inheritance. As a Sijelo, the work brings an important topic into the temporary community of visitors and opens it up for their perception and reflection.
