As part of Berlin Fashion Week, the Berliner Salon is presenting a week-long group exhibition of young designers in the Museum of Photography.
The designs were selected by Christiane Arp, Chairwoman of the Fashion Council Germany and co-initiator of the Berliner Salon, and Marcus Kurz, Managing Director of Nowadays and co-initiator of the Berliner Salon, and – in collaboration with Britta Bommert, Head of the Fashion Image Collection at the Kunstbibliothek, and Matthias Harder, Director of the Helmut Newton Foundation – presented in a curated synopsis alongside the exhibits from the museum's exhibitions.
The Berliner Salon offers young designers from Germany the opportunity to present their collections to an international audience.
The presentation is designed as a dialogue with the two current special exhibitions at the Museum of Photography. "Polaroids" in the Helmut Newton Foundation's exhibition offers a glimpse into the sketchbook of one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century:
Helmut Newton used instant photography equally as a preliminary study and to evaluate lighting conditions and composition. Hundreds of such original Polaroids are housed in the Foundation's Berlin archive; a representative selection was made from these and supplemented with Polaroid enlargements. "Rico Puhlmann.
Fashion Photography 50s–90s" in the Kaisersaal of the Museum of Photography offers a comprehensive insight into the drawing and photographic work of Rico Puhlmann, who worked for many major magazines for over 40 years, first as an illustrator and then as a fashion photographer; the most sought-after models of their time posed before his camera.
The dialogue between fashion designs and the fashion photographs of Rico Puhlmann and Helmut Newton creates a fascinating exchange: design and photography equally revolve around aspects such as representation, self-presentation, body image, and social representation. The Berliner Salon group exhibition at the Museum für Fotografie thus highlights the close connections between the artistic media of photography and fashion.
The exhibition is supported by Museum&Location.
A special exhibition of the Berliner Salon in collaboration with the Kunstbibliothek – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the Helmut Newton Foundation.
