The musical framework for the evening is provided by two important works of German Romanticism, both based on the B-A-C-H sequence – a musical monument in honour of Johann Sebastian Bach, whose 275th anniversary of death we are commemorating this year.

Robert Schumann's ‘Fugues on the Name BACH’ creatively explore Bach's contrapuntal art, with Schumann making use of the expressive possibilities of his own time. Franz Liszt's ‘Prelude and Fugue on B-A-C-H’, on the other hand, develops like a free, dramatic fantasy – monumental soundscapes meet technical brilliance.

The programme is complemented by choral arrangements by Johann Michael Bach and Johann Bernhard Bach, as well as Johann Sebastian's Trio Sonata in C minor.
