Wagner and Mendelssohn lived and composed during the Romantic period. It stands for escapism, a return to nature, retreat into fantasy and dream worlds, a fascination with the uncanny, longing, and love.
It is therefore no coincidence that Mendelssohn and Wagner addressed the spirit world in their works: Mendelsohn in his music for A Midsummer Night's Dream and Wagner in his opera The Flying Dutchman. Coincidentally, both works premiered in the same year, 1843.
In The Flying Dutchman, Wagner created the blueprint for later film scores about sailors and pirates. While Wagner's compositions for the spirit world are rather robust, Mendelssohn's music is quiet and delicate. It is precisely this different sensory listening experience that will be the special appeal of our concert.
